Bicycle contributes to making education, health care and civic services more accessible: Special on World Bicycle Day 2026

Established by the UN, World Bicycle Day is an annual global observance held on June 3rd with an aim to 'celebrates the bicycle as a simple, affordable, clean, and sustainable means of transportation that promotes physical health and environmental stewardship.'The occasion is widely commemorated across India and globally with mass cycling rallies, health awareness campaigns, and community rides.

According to the UN, at all ages, cycling provides benefits of being physically active and it is also 'a pathway for achieving greater health equity. For the poorest urban sector, who often cannot afford private vehicles, walking and cycling can provide a form of transport while reducing the risk of many diseases.

The WHO emphasizes the use of the bicycle as a means of fostering sustainable development, strengthening education, including physical education, for children and young people, promoting health, preventing disease, promoting tolerance, mutual understanding and respect and facilitating social inclusion and a culture of peace.

I have taught physics principles using bicycle and language along with science literacy by using the names and parts of a bicycle, poems on bicycle, stick drawing visual activities, cycle polo, cycling expedition, etc. (see inset AI clip}
