World Telecommunication and Information Society Day
On the occasion of World Telecommunication and Information Society Day (WTISD), May 17, 2026, the UN called on governments, industry, and communities to strengthen the digital lifelines that keep the world running.
"In a world that increasingly depends on uninterrupted connectivity, the resilience of our digital networks is essential. Digital lifelines – terrestrial networks, submarine cables, satellites, and data systems – form the backbone of our communities and economies," stated the UN.
The theme of the observance this year "Digital Lifelines—strengthening resilience in a connected world," is focusing on keeping communication and information systems safe, secure, and operational during crises.
Based on the Wikipedia and e-gyankosh, an information society is a post-industrial society where the creation, distribution, and manipulation of information are the primary economic, political, and cultural activities. Driven by digital advancements, it relies on information technology rather than manufacturing as the engine for growth. In this era, data acts as the most vital resource, transforming how people work, learn, communicate, and govern.
Proponents argue that technologies like global networks profoundly reshape social organization. However, this shift raises critical questions about digital divides, privacy, and inequality, as access to information largely dictates societal power.
