The World Observe the Amnesty International Day
Amnesty International Day is celebrated every year on May 28, commemorating the founding of the organization in 1961. This global movement aims to shed light on human rights issues around the world, promote gender justice, and organize the yearly "Write for Rights" campaign.
On this day, a detailed annual report is released, documenting human rights violations, abuses of power, and government hostility in different regions. The Write for Rights campaign encourages millions to write letters, sign petitions, and take direct action for those facing human rights violations. You can also get involved by supporting the cause through advocacy, raising awareness, and education.
While Amnesty International is not officially banned in India, the organization was unfortunately compelled to stop all its human rights activities in the country in September 2020 after the Enforcement Directorate (ED) froze its bank accounts. This crackdown and the subsequent halt of operations stem from several actions and factors that the Government of India deemed anti-establishment.
