World Book and Copyright Day (WBCD) to be observed on April 23

The UN announced and UNESCO organized World Book and Copyright Day (WBCD) on April 23 every year to encourage reading, publishing, and copyright awareness worldwide. This day was established in 1995 to honor the death anniversaries of literary greats William Shakespeare, Miguel de Cervantes, and Inca Garcilaso de la Vega. The event aims to promote appreciation for books, authors, and intellectual property.

The goal of WBCD is to inspire everyone, particularly young people, to enjoy reading and to recognize the invaluable contributions of creators to social and cultural development. It reminds us that books connect us to knowledge, empathy, and cultural understanding.

The initiative was suggested by the Spanish government and accepted by UNESCO in 1995. Today, WBCD is celebrated in over a hundred countries and features workshops, storytelling sessions, and literary events.
