Sonam Lhosar 2026 Celebrated


 The Sonam Lhosar festival (Jan 19, 2026) is the New Year celebration of the Tamang and Hyolmo people of Nepal, Sikkim, West Bengal (Darjeeling) and many Hill of India regions of India to marks the beginning of the lunar new year, symbolizing peace, prosperity, and new beginnings. 

Homes worship places and monasteries are cleaned and decorated to welcome gods and goddesses and drive away evil spirits. People visit monasteries (Gompas) to offer prayers for good fortune, long life, and well-being, with monks performing special rituals and mask dances.

People wear colorful traditional dresses and prepare special foods like sweet rice pancakes, rice-based chapati for family gatherings and community feasts.  Cultural programs, including traditional music and dances like the Tamang Selo and Damphu dance, are central to the celebrations.
