The School Of Kashmiri Shaivism: A Short Mote

Kashmir Shaivism, also known as Trika Philosophy, is a deep and non-dualistic tradition that thrived in Kashmir in ancient times. Unlike other philosophies that view the world as mere illusion, this particular school of Shaivism asserts that the entire universe is indeed real — it represents the vibrant and joyful expression of pure Consciousness, which is identified as Shiva.

At the heart of this tradition lies the belief that God (Shiva), divine energy (Shakti), and the individual soul are fundamentally one. It suggests that humans have lost sight of their true divine essence due to ignorance or maya. Liberation, or moksha, is not about fleeing the world but rather about recognizing and reclaiming, or pratyabhijna, the understanding that one’s own self is, and has always been, united with Shiva.

Essential practices within this tradition include meditation, the use of mantras, and the acknowledgment of the divine pulsation or spanda in everyday life. It is a path that affirms life, making it accessible for householders, and highlights that worldly enjoyment and spiritual liberation can coexist harmoniously. Rather than enforcing strict renunciation, it promotes a heightened awareness of oneself as the divine Shiva-Tatva.
