Gita Jayanti 2025: Significance and Ode to the Gita
The festival of Gita Jayanti in 2025 is being celebrated today - Monday, December 1 - to commemorate the day Lord Krishna delivered the Bhagavad Gita's divine message to Arjuna on the battlefield of Kurukshetra.
The festival falls on the Shukla Ekadashi (11th day of the waxing moon) of the Hindu month of Margashirsha and is also known as Mokshada Ekadashi, a day believed to grant liberation (moksha). The Bhagavad Gita scripture is considered the essence of all Vedic wisdom, providing guidance on dharma (righteous action), selfless duty, inner peace, and the path to liberation.
According to ISKON, Gita Jayanti is the auspicious day of the advent of Srimad Bhagavad-Gitaon which Lord Krishna imparted the essence of Vedic knowledge to Arjuna over 5000 years ago and enlightened him about the ultimate goal of life.
Prior to Gita Jayanti, a three-day conference and discussions provided new ideas and way forward for developing Kurukshetra as a land of Bhagwad-Gita.
Here is a short poem 'An Ode to the Gita' on the occasion.
When shadows fall and paths grow dim,
The Gita's light, a gentle hymn.
Do your duty, strong and true,
Let go of what may come to you.
With loving heart, and knowing mind,
A peaceful place you're sure to find.
Not for gain, but right to do,
A better self will bloom in you.
Through tangled days, a guiding star,
The Gita shows us who we are.
