A short note on lesson study as a rapid research method to live the teacher-researcher role in the fast changing world

In educational institutions, rapid research through innovative research lesson creation and lesson studies serves as a methodology that emphasizes speed and efficiency, aiming to provide quick and impactful insights. This often involves simple frameworks, very short study time frames - even a classroom sesson, and specific contextual objectives. Lesson studies can be evaluated quickly as standalone studies. Typically, these lesson studies are tactical, concentrating on particular questions and designed to deliver results. Since a lesson study is always triangulated for targeted insights, it assists the research team in swiftly identifying issues and emerging needs through in-house rapid research on current topics or the prescribed curriculum.

A lesson study consists of a three-member collaborative professional development process that follows a four-stage cycle: Study and Plan the research lesson, Teach and Observe, Debrief and Revise, and Reflect and Report. In the second stage, one team member teaches the lesson while another observes the students to gather data. After the lesson, the team debriefs to discuss the observations, which helps inform revisions for the lesson plan and standardizes it for institutional use. In the final stage, the team analyzes and documents the learning from the entire cycle and shares or disseminates the findings with a broader audience, contributing to a larger body of knowledge.
