Need to link the Gita with music for wider dissemination of its eternal message: A short note

Traditional  classical Indian music is profoundly shaped by ancient scriptures. The Shrimad Bhagavad Gita, which translates to the divine song sung by Lord Krishna himself, encourages us to live a life rich in selfless devotion, action, and knowledge. The path of devotion significantly influenced  traditional music. In a similar vein, music has made a notable contribution to the development of the bhakti cult and philosophy of life in India's scriptures. Some contemporary Ragas inspired by Lord Krishna, who sang the Divine song of the Gita, include Kanhara, Bihari, Shyam Kalyan, Mohan Kalyan, Krishna Kalyan, and Govardhani Todi.

The essence of the Gita is most effectively expressed through musical forms such as bhajans, kirtans, chants, prayers, recitations, and songs, as music aids in concentration and provides tranquility. The connection between music and the Gita is evident, given that music and spirituality are intricately linked. Indian traditional music plays a crucial role in disseminating the spirituality of our Vedic culture and the philosophy of the Gita, as music transcends the barriers of caste, race, and religion. It possesses the ability to bring people together and connect them with the supreme soul.

Moreover, scientific research has demonstrated that stress can be alleviated through the Bhagavad Gita and music. The message of detached duty, or dharma, conveyed through music facilitates stress relief. Additionally, the globalization of the Bhagavad Gita through music, where the Gita's teachings are musicalized and performed, has gained popularity among both scholars and the general public, even in distant regions.

Thus, the connection between music and spirituality is profound and multifaceted that transcends language, culture, and practices of formally organized religions. It can be concluded that music can serve as a unique medium to the ineffable spiritual growth by creating a space for communal unity, emotional release, and personal transcendence.
