TEN APT QUOTES FROM THE BHAGAVAD GITA FOR CONTEMPLATIVE PRACTICE AT SECONDARY SCHOOL LEVEL

Ten quotes from the Bhagavad Gita were selected for one-hour guided contemplative practice by secondary students to find their impact on the students in terms of perceived enhancement in self-awareness competency as a part of life skills education.

TEN QUOTES

  1. There are three gates leading to the hell of self-destruction for the soul — lust, anger, and greed.
  2. Those who are free from anger and all material desires, who are self-realized, self-disciplined, and constantly endeavouring for perfection, are assured of liberation in the Supreme.
  3. For one who has conquered his mind, a mind is best of friends, but for one who has failed to do so, a mind is the greatest enemy.
  4. One who has control over the mind is tranquil in heat and cold, in pleasure and pain, and in honor and dishonour
  5. He who has no attachments can really love others, for his love is pure and divine
  6. You have a right to perform your prescribed duties, but you are not entitled to the fruits of your action
  7. As the ignorant perform their duties with attachment to results, the learned may similarly act, but without attachment, for the sake of leading people on the right path
  8. One who is not disturbed by happiness and distress and is steady in both is certainly eligible for liberation.
  9. One who shuns selfish attachment to the fruits of work and remains ever content and dependent on no one but himself – although engaged in all kinds of undertakings, such a person is said to be in the renounced order of life
  10. One who has wisdom and discernment is always calm and collected; such a person is in true knowledge
