State of maths teaching at senior secondary level and remedial suggestions for maths teachers
State of maths teaching at senior secondary level and remedial suggestions for maths teachers: A short note
A feedback from parents with
maths background and a focus group discussion with three math researcher-educators revealed the
following:
Conceptual understanding of senior secondary maths is being totally ignored. Teachers often demonstrate their own computation skills in solving sums, stress algorithm and writing-intensive proofs without including logic. Hardly any attention is being paid to concept attainment and language of mathematics
Focus group suggested three steps that the school must take to proper teaching of maths at senior secondary level
- · Readiness worksheets for linkage to previous knowledge and STEM relationship
- · Emphasis on concept attainment model or conceptual understanding of math and language of math through weekly assignments to (i) explain the concepts learnt during the week and (ii) terminology and vocabulary through guided reading of the course coverage
- · Worksheets for step-wise logic in proofs and computation - transitional logic
