Bringing dance integrated learning to schools: Special on International Dance Day ~Lalit Kishore

Created and coordinated by International Theatre Institute (ITI) in 1982, the International Dance Day to be celebrated every year on the 29th April which is also the birthday of Jean-Georges Noverre who is creator of modern ballet. The noted dancer, Marianela NÚÑEZ of Argentina has urged that artists must  share the joy of dance with others

According to the ITI, the aim of the annual observance is 'to celebrate dance, revel in the universality of this art form, cross all political, cultural and ethnic barriers, and bring people together with a common language - dance.' The ITI has urged the world community to 'see the value and importance of the art form “dance” by recognising its value and realising its potential for economic growth.

Some educators and therapists have stresses the need for art-integrated learning with centrality of dance in early grades since dance can work as good medium to develop literacy. According to Missouri Alliance for Arts Education, the road to literacy involves the translation of movement expression and communication into words. "Learning language and learning dance are not separate threads, but are woven together and incorporated into a fabric of communication and understanding," it adds. The Alliances stresses, "Learning, thought, creativity, and intelligence don't just come from the brain alone, but from the entire body. Movement combinations increase memory, order, and sequencing skills. Creating dances also increases self-esteem which is so very important to learning."

Sabine Howe states, "There are so many reasons why dance is important to the health and development of our young people. Above all, children need to move! Any way to get kids moving on their feet is a must (especially in a digital era). Dance burns calories, strengthens muscles, improves balance, increases flexibility, and gives the heart a good workout. Dance has also been proven to increase cognitive development."

"As a part of interdisciplinary knowledge and it application, dances are being used as scientific healing interventions as Dance Movement Therapy and spiritual or devotion dancing popularised by Hare Krishna cult and Sufi Dances," states Lalit Kishore at speekingtree.in. according to him, dance integrated learning is an exploration into academic subjects through use of movements and gestures and dance phrases for flow for a  unit of study.
