BISRA MUNDA PUNYA TITHI: REMEMBERING TRIBAL FREEDOM FIGHTER AND REFORMIST

 BIO-NOTE  ON BISRA MUNDA

The tribal reformist and freedom fighter Birsa Munda (1875–1900) passed away in Ranchi Central Jail on June 9, 1900, at the young age of 25. He is known as Dharti Abba (Father of the Earth) and his death anniversary is commemorated as a day of martyrdom and tribal pride across India. He had championed the slogan “Abua Raj Ete Jana, Maharani Raj Tundu Jana.”

According to Bisra Munda, true freedom is autonomous tribal self-rule. Tribals have sovereign rights  on Jal -water, Jangal -forests, and Jameen -land. They are inalienable foundation of indigenous existence, cultural dignity and self-reliance. None can take away their Land and Resource Rights. Honour tribal community ownership over forests. Keep them free from external subjugation and exploitation. As a reformist, he had urged tribal people to abandon alcoholism, unite across diverse communities, and embrace clean, hygienic living.

 INSPIRED COUPLETS

Our own wise rule, the tribal way,
Is freedom's heart, come what may.

For water, forest, earth so grand,
Are sovereign rights in tribal hand.

These gifts of nature, deep and true,
Our life, our culture, ever new.

No power can these rights erase,
Our land, our life, in this sacred space.

From ancient forests, we decree,
Community ownership, wild and free.

From looters’ hands, we stand apart,
No chains to bind, no broken heart.
